Career Opportunities
One or more characters take a "career aptitude test," which is supposed to determine their ideal career. The results are sometimes disappointing, always surprising.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis
Appearances
- The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Season 2, episode 21, "Dobie Versus the Machine" (1961). Dobie and Maynard graduate from high school and don't know what to do with their futures. At Herbert's suggestion, they take psychological tests to decide what their careers should be, but before he gets his results, Dobie decides he doesn't want to let a machine decide his future.
- The Simpsons: Season 3, episode 18, "Separate Vocations" (1992). Lisa and Bart take career tests, and Lisa is devastated when her results say she should be a homemaker. Meanwhile, Bart is thrilled that his test says he should be a cop, and he starts enforcing the law at school, but the authority goes to his head.
- 3rd Rock from the Sun: Season 2, episode 20, "I Enjoy Being a Dick" (1997). Tommy and August take career aptitude tests, and Tommy's ironically says he should be an astronaut.
- Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place: Season 2, episode 21, "Two Guys, a Girl, and Barenaked Ladies" (1999). Pete has decided that he no longer wants to be an architect, but he's not sure what new career to pursue, so he takes a career aptitude test, which tells him he should either work in architecture or food service (both of which he has already tried).
- Malcolm in the Middle: Season 2, episode 14, "Hal Quits" (2001). Malcolm's career aptitude test says he can do any job in the world because his scores were excellent in every area, much to the chagrin of the school counselor.
- The Goldbergs: Season 4, episode 2, "I Heart Video Dating" (2016). Barry takes a career aptitude test that, to his dismay, tells him he should be a bookkeeper. Instead, he decides to become a gym teacher.
