In the new millennium, sensitivity was key. After living through Y2K, 9/11, and a recession, people found it hard to laugh. Sitcoms did away with laugh tracks and let authentic, complex characters drive their storylines. It's no surprise that the 2000s marked the rise of mockumentary series, which aimed for realism over the usual goofs and gags.
